According to a recent study undertaken in Eastern Finland (Kainuu region) forestry is only a minor user of forestry roads. With other words, the roads we see stretching across eastern Finland’s forests are not so often used for forestry operations as we would be inclined to think. Research shows that the numbers of wild large carnivores in Europe have been constantly increasing. Surprisingly, the animal populations are found in the same places as people. The new study published in the journal Science by Guillaume Chapron and colleagues is containing the most exhaustive data set ever collected on large carnivores in Europe.

Results are indeed surprising, especially when considering Europe’s long history of dense human population and ever changing developed landscapes. If true, this is indeed a conservation success story.

In Sweden there are tree breeding programs for both Scots pine and Norway spruce, and recent studies in a trial area outside Örnsköldsvik shows that a way to minimize the unwanted inbreeding from surrounding trees is simple. From 2010 to 2013 a plastic tent have been erected over the stand and from the pine cones that were a result from the flowering in 2010 shows that the idea was successful, there had been no pollination from trees outside the trial area.

The European Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2013 will bring together scientists and practitioners working on adaptation to the impacts of climate change. The conference will create a European forum bringing together world-class science, with the aim of fostering a creative dialogue with climate adaptation policy makers and practitioners. The theme of the conference is integrating climate into action.

The conference is an initiative of four EU research projects: RESPONSES, CLIMSAVE, MEDIATION and ClimateCost.

The International Day of Forests is coming up this month (March 21)

In November 1971, at the request of the European Confederation of Agriculture, FAO'S member governments supported the annual observance of 21 March as World Forestry Day.

Preparations have already started for the world-event in 2013.

The UN International Day of Forests invites all Member States to hold, in connection to this international day, awareness-raising events on activities related to our forests.

As of this Sunday (3rd of March 2013), the EU Timber Regulation will prohibit the first placing of illegally produced wood products on the EU market.

Plant breeding has allowed nurseries to grow spruce plants with volume growth up to 35% greater than that of the spruces currently growing in Swedish forests.

Spruce cuttings with over 25 % greater growth are already on the market since the end of 2012 according to Bo Karlsson (Skogforsk).

It is not the first time when researchers discover that sometimes exotic tree species are not only surviving but also outperforming the domestic or native conifer species even in the harsh climatic conditions of Norrland (northern Sweden).

The Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute (Skog og landskap) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for a bark beetle transcriptomics/genomics project funded by the Norwegian Research Council’s Frimedbio program.

The postdoctoral fellow will join a team with a strong track record studying conifer-bark beetle-fungus interactions. You will play a central role in the bark beetle transcriptomics part of the project, and be responsible for Next Generation Sequencing of the beetle transcriptome and bioinformatics work on beetles, trees and fungi.
