A few weeks ago, on 03-05 November, the Centre of Advanced Research on Environmental Services from Nordic Forest Ecosystems (CAR-ES II), funded by Nordic Forest Research (SNS) 2011-2015, arranged and hosted a 3-day conference that had a focused theme on Managing Forests to Promote Environmental Services.

As summarized at the conference, amongst key environmental services provided by the Nordic and Baltic forests are carbon sequestration, water protection and biodiversity - all linked to the quality of soil:

The international forest debate regarding pathways to achieve sustainability in forest management continues to be a point of contention and complexity. The division amongst forest sector stakeholders centers around those actors who focus on the carbon storing capacity of standing forests and those who are preoccupied with the carbon sequestration capacity of growing, productive forests.

This study simulates the long-term effects of set-aside establishment and tree retention practices on the future availability of large trees and dead wood. These are two forest structures of high importance to biodiversity conservation. The researchers used a forest decision support system to project the amounts of these structures over 200 years in two landscapes from Northern Sweden under different management scenarios: with and without set-asides and tree retention.
